Avast!!!

Ah ha m' hearties!

I feel like I should be sitting here writing this on a desert island with a parrot on my shoulder (wouldn't that be nice! well maybe not the parrot bit. Maybe the parrot flying across the splendid tropical view... yes I like that better). Ahem...

Anyway moving on, I got down to the business of making my little pirate a pirate hat at the weekend, with mixed results... I both love it and want to tear it up to start again!

So here it is...

I had planned on just a simple skeleton on the front. But it was too simple so the waves and ship got added. Myself and Mr.T ummed and ahhed over what the ship should look like. I'd done a simple sail boat at first but apparently that just wouldnt do for a pirate hat (!?!) so I got a bit more creative.

Ironically the ship is the bit I probably now love the most (please no comment on the fact that the little flag at the top is going in the wrong direction if the sails are being blown the other way. It just didnt look right from an aesthetic point of view and thats just how its going to be!).

However... when we tried it on the boy it was all wrong!

Its WAY too tall and doesn't really look like a pirate hat at all I dont think. :-( Mr T says I just need to bring it down at the top a bit which would improve it but I'm still not best pleased. Hence the wanting to rip it up sentiment!

Little O seems happy enough for now so it will still be an addition to the dress up box, but I now have a bee in my bonnet about pirate hats so look out for more pirate themed posts!

What do you reckon?

  2. I think that you are being far too hard on yourself. I think it is the best hat I have ever seen. The ship is amazing and I wouldn't have noticed about the flags!! As long as the pirate is happy I don't think that you have anything to worry about

  3. It is gorgeous and the little ship is super sweet. For a more pirate hat shape, maybe making it in two parts would work - like a band that wraps around the head and then a pirate hat shaped piece that sits flat-ish at the front - if that makes sense! So it can extend past the head on either side?

    1. Thanks Christina. Yes I had been thinking something similar. I'm going to have to do some playing about with that. Small heads seem to be tricky to get stuff right for!

  5. Your pirate looks quite happy so don't worry too much! I love the ship, and figure it may be a gusty day, whipping that little flag at the top in different directions all the time (oh, isn't artistic licence a wonderful thing?). I agree with Christina - maybe have a flat front to the hat and a band for around his head? That's something for when he's a bit bigger and slightly fussier about his pirate status maybe! For now, that hat looks super! Thanks for joining in with Handmade Monday x

    1. Thanks Wendy. Yes very good point - it must be a gusty day - I like that story! :-) I think I may end up waiting until he is a little bigger. I have a feeling it might be tricky to get right so a little distance from the project will probably help! Love handmade Monday. Glad I managed to link in this week!

  6. I love it! It's really easy to be super critical about things you have made but everyone who sees this hat is going to ask you make one for their son! It is brilliant - and the ship detail is fab x
